Sheila Fleming

Inspiring connections with music
Educator, songwriter, and musician Sheila Fleming has been making music all the days of her life. She is that rare combination of talents – a dynamic teacher, a superlative singer, an accomplished guitarist, and an extraordinary songwriter.
As a music educator, Sheila holds a degree in Music Education from the University of Iowa and is certified in the Orff-Schulwerk approach. In her classes and camps, Sheila offers a playful, child-centered, participatory approach to learning and offers a mix of doing and understanding that encourages students to express themselves in - and perhaps discover themselves through - music. Ms. Fleming is Nationally Board Certified and serves as a licensed trainer in the Nurtured Heart Approach (a relationship-focused methodology for helping children awaken to their inherent greatness while facilitating classroom success.) Sheila has been selected as Teacher of the Year several times in her 30-year teaching career. She has studied and performed percussion with the Batucada Nossa Senora, under the direction of Ken Dalluge, and has taken classes and workshops with percussion greats Beverly Botsford, Glen Velez, and currently studies frame drum with master percussionist River Guerguerian. Ms. Fleming currently teaches general music in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District, where she also directs a 75-member elementary chorus, leads enrichment classes and camps in drumming, ensemble singing, and mindfulness. Sheila also presents workshops and clinics to educators and musicians throughout North Carolina.
Sheila's Camp Motivation
Most children in public schools attend a music class once a week. This means a child might receive as few as twenty-five music classes in one school year. I want to provide the children in my community more opportunities to make music together, and that is exactly what they will do in my summer camps!
